Headed to a 1st birthday party and need some ideas of what to give that little cutie? Looking for some quality toys that will keep your little one entertained? Browsing the aisles of Target or the pages of Amazon can be overwhelming to say the least. Especially if you’re new at the toddler thing. No worries, I’ve rounded up our top toy picks below for a one-year-old, price points starting at about 12 bucks. All toys are toddler tested and approved!
- The Spinagain.
My mom originally bought this toy for Julian after hearing about how highly rated it is. This corkscrew spinner toy is so simple but oh-so-awesome. It will keep my son entertained for hours….and let’s face it, his parents too :).
- Fisher Price Piggy Bank
Fisher Price is always a trusted brand and makes some of our favorite toys. Santa brought this one to Julian when he was just 11 months old and he has loved it ever since. At first it was challenging for him to deposit the coins into the top slot, but after lots of practice, he’s got it down! Between the ten colorful coins, door to piggy’s hallow belly, and button-nose that you can push to hear fun counting songs and sound effects, it’s another toy that keeps him entertained for a quite some time. The fine-motor-skills practice and hand-eye coordination are added benefits.
- Melissa and Doug Animal Sound Puzzles
Animal sounds have been a major soundtrack around here lately and these puzzles have helped Julian tremendously with identifying animals and learning the sounds they make. These are also great for fine-motor development and concentration, and I love that Julian won’t outgrow these puzzles anytime in the near future. Each puzzle requires one AAA battery and ample lighting (we learned that when the sheep wouldn’t baa due to our dimly lit living room).
- Leapfrog My Pal Scout (or Violet)
Any toy that keeps a baby entertained on an 18-hour road trip is a must have in my book. We were given Scout at our baby shower and used him a ton in the car on our long drive from Florida to Michigan and back. You can personalize him to sing a song spelling your child’s name, stating his/her favorite food, color, and more! Julian has loved him since he was a baby, and he is still one of his favorites! Violet is the purple version 🙂
What can I say, once a teacher always a teacher…which is why I have to include books in this gift guide. Julian is huge fan of story time, and I’ll often catch him “reading” his books on his own. I knows it’s because we introduced books to him as a newborn and have incorporated them into daily life since. His favorites at this age are the books with buttons for sounds effects. My mom found some of these awesome Discovery books which have been a hit around here. (Check back for our favorite baby and toddler storybooks post coming soon!)

- Highlights Magazine Subscription
This is a fun and unique gift that keeps on giving! Highlights offers magazines for all aged kids. We currently get the “Hello” series which are geared for ages 0-2. These magazines are perfect because they are tear and bite proof! They are usually themed toward a topic and offer lots of pictures, stories, songs, and games. Julian loves getting his magazine in the mail each month!
- Water Table
Last but not least, what one-year-old doesn’t have a blast with a water table? Julian has and LOVES these two tables. Usually we’ll fill one with sand and one with water…then momma will whip up an icy Pina Colada and we’ll pretend we’re at the beach 😉
